MC Glossary

DEFINITION word, business concept for glossary page

This MC glossary serves as a reference point for readers and researchers engaging with the complex and often misunderstood culture of the Motorcycle Club (MC) world. Developed by Strengthening The Set, We are an independent cultural heritage and public-interest research publisher based in Swansea, it defines the language, symbols, structures, and protocols that shape MC life as a living cultural system. Each term included here contributes to a more accurate, respectful understanding of how tradition, identity, and community operate within motorcycle clubs past and present.

One-Percenter (1%)

A self-identifying label used by certain motorcycle clubs to distinguish themselves from mainstream motorcyclists. The term is commonly linked to a widely circulated, but historically disputed, claim that the American Motorcyclist Association stated that 99% of motorcyclists are law-abiding. Although the association has reported no official record of this statement, the “1%” symbol/diamond has been adopted within motorcycle club culture to signify an outlaw or nonconformist identity. While 1%er clubs often refer to themselves as outlaw or diamond clubs, the term goes much deeper than this it is a mindset and a way of life, individuals that use this term live my their own rules/laws and outside of society norms.

Outlaw Motorcycle Club (OMC)

A motorcycle club that is not sanctioned by official governing bodies like the American Motorcyclist Association and operates according to its own rules, often with a strong emphasis on independence and brotherhood. Often called a diamond club, they follow the same mindset and way of life as 1%ers can often be found acting as a sponsor/supervisor to small clubs.

Please note many definitions label a prospect a probationary member they are not – a probationary member refers to someone who for whatever reason no longer has his patch and is in a probationary period to earn it back.
